UPDATE: 10:05 am - Early morning Fire at Plastech
Under:
UPDATE: 10:05 am - Several Firetrucks from different cities are lining up down State road 37 to keep the flow of water going. I added more Pics below.
UPDATE: 9:12 am - It was just called in on the scanner from Chief of Police Jack Miller that it is going to be an all day event. He has also asked the Mayor to declare a State of Emergency. The Mayor is headed to the scene. Again, Please stay away from the area!
It was reported on the scanner that Plastech caught on fire early this morning (July 14,08) at a little after 7 am. Right now at the writing of this article the plant is still burning so please stay away from the area and give the departments the room they need to fight it. Thanks.

The fire is pretty much out
The fire is pretty much out now but still smoldering for awhile. Thanks to all the fire departments that came out to help. I'll see if I can't get a list of all of them and post it later. I guess I am closed for part of the day :)

Photos
You got some really good pictures of what was going on this morning. That's great that Channel 8 is going to use some of them on tonight's news. I'll be sure to watch at 5:30. Great Job Al!!
Well
Looks like only one casualty in the fire today. The neighbors lost the head off her concrete pineapple when the channel 13 news truck was backing up to leave :) Its the last picture I uploaded. Enjoy!

pineapple
Were they wearing seatbelts?
Yes But
The poor pineapple never had a chance :)

Big Thanks
Big thanks to the fire departments who responded. Thank goodness Elwood has paid firemen instead of a volunteer department.
Fire at Plastech
Thanks Al for this great website and keeping us informed on all of the updates. Thumbs Up to our great fire department and to all of those who helped. They did a great job and I know the families of ALL the firemen were worried sick, I was worried for them too!! They should be applauded for what was sopposed to be an all day job. Their trucks should also say..."Protect and Serve." They truly deserve a big thumbs up!!!!!!
Anything for a laugh
I guess the next person that got laid off or fired got some revenge. Way to put another family into foreclosure.
I hope our firemen are well
I hope our firemen are well rested today after the long day at Plastech. As we came home from a baseball game last night we saw they were fighting a house fire on South A Street. Hope no one was hurt there. There's not much scarier than a house fire!
neighbor on fire
my neighbor works at plastech, and she said they had fires all the time but got them put out and didnt call the fire department, for those who care to know..
response to nurse911's comment
If you had not noticed, MOST ALL of the FIREMEN that assisted with the fire opperations and bringing in water to fight the fire at Plastech were indeed VOLUNTEER firefighters. You might want to choose your words a little better. Kinda sounds very ungrateful to the people that helped your Precious Paid fire Dept.
nurses 911
Sorry couldn't sign in but I guess I should have chosen my words a little more carefully. The volunteer fire departments do a great job. My comment was more about response time. The volunteers have to come from home, work or wherever they happen to be. They do a fantastic job, it just takes a little longer to get there. However, I did say thanks to the departments plural not just to Elwood.
???
How can you tell or know that it was mostly Volunteers...i cant tell in the pics...just curious...
??????
did the police set the fire?
Yes they did set it
And they are stopping by your place next :)
Volunteers
You can't tell by the pics who is a volunteer or not. If you are familiar with the names such as Pipe Creek, Richland, or Madison, those are some of them. Usually your township fire departments are volunteers. I think it takes a very special person to be a firefighter, those men put their lives on line every time the pager goes off. The uncertainty of not knowing what you are going to pull up on. Trying to console a homeowner after their home has just burnt or trying to help them gather any of their prize posessions that may be left. As I stated it takes a specail person to do the job. Nurse 911 please proof your next posting a little better. Comments such as yours, even though you retracted it are really harsh.
nurse 911
Can't sign in again but just wanted to say that I didn't retract anything. I just added to it. I live in a community now that only has a volunteer department. And while they are a great group of people and do a fantastic job, it still takes them longer to respond because they have to be "called in." I wish we had a paid ambulance and fire department so that someone would be there 24/7 when 911 is called. Oh and before I moved, I lived in Elwood for 36 years and consider it my hometown.
ok so
You explained yourself better. you are right it is bad that they have to come from wherever they are to the fire barn and then respond, yes it does take precious time.
ok so
you explained your comment. My bad!
