UPDATED: Accident on SR 13, Friday July 6, 2007

Local paramedics, fire and police were on scene at an accident Friday, July 7, 2007 on State Road 13 in Elwood, Indiana.

Five people were injured along State Road 13, just south of Elwood city limits around 1:30 p.m. Friday. Two of the injuries are critical.

Jonnie Harpel, 39, Elwood, was driving a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup south on SR13 when he swerved to avoid a FedEx truck that had slowed down looking for an address.

At that time, Harpel's truck hit a 1997 Geo Prizm driven by Kristin Pete, 21, of Elwood. Also in Pete's car were Sydney Bixby, 2 1/2, Kelly Pete (Kristin's sister), 17, and 18-month-old Sully Bixby, all of Elwood.

Elwood Police Department, Elwood Fire Department, Alexandria EMS, Pipe Creek Township volunteer firefighters and Madison County Emergency Management responded to the accident along with Madison County Sheriff's Department.

According to reports, the accident remains under investigation, but there were no signs of alcohol or drugs at the scene.
